History of Fairlee
Originally part of New Hampshire’s land grants, known as the “New Hampshire Grants” or the “Benning Wentworth Grants“, Fairlee was chartered by Gov. Wentworth in 1761 along with many other Upper Valley towns. The land grants were made on more than 100 towns west of the Connecticut River. Eventually there were disputes about the land between New Hampshire and New York, which also laid claim to land in the region – ultimately leading to the Vermont Republic, and onto what is now the State of Vermont.
The first settlers arrived in Fairlee in 1766 and settlers arrived in what is now West Fairlee in 1778. The town became an small epicenter for industry with a gristmill, several saw mills and a factory building pipes and pumps. The Fairlee Railroad Depot was constructed in 1848 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest railroad structure along the Connecticut River.

Most notably, Fairlee is home to Lake Morey, and the Lake Morey Resort. The resort is year round a destination for vacationers. Swimming and water sports are area highlights in the summer and ice skating, ice fishing, snowshoeing and other outdoor activities in the winter. Lake Morey is said to have the longest ice skating trail in the entire nation.
Fairlee is also home to Camp Billings, a boys and girls summer camp and Aloha Camp, an all girls summer camp. Both camps have etched their mark in the community and carry great pride within the community.
Open for both boys and girls, Camp Billings has been around for more than 108 years! They pride themselves on being a fun and educational camp where kids will leave with a lifetime of memories. Children spend two weeks at Camp Billings, on the banks of Lake Fairlee. The programs offered and the staff’s experience have children making new friends from the get-go, the experience provides a home away from home. A typical day is filled with sports, games, singing and excitement.
The Aloha Camp is an all girls camp located in Fairlee, Vermont. Operating for more than 100 years, the camp hosts girls from all over the world. The camp is located on Lake Morey, surrounded by beautiful meadows and forests. This teen girl camp is perfect for girls who love to learning new skills, learning about community and making lots of great, lasting, friendships in the process. Aloha Camp is a fun, safe summer home away from home.
