History of Fairlee

Originally part of New Hampshire’s land grants, known as the “New Hampshire Grants” or the “Benning Wentworth Grants“, Fairlee was chartered by Gov. Wentworth in 1761 along with many other Upper Valley towns. The land grants were made on more than 100 towns west of the Connecticut River. Eventually there were disputes about the land between New Hampshire and New York, which also laid claim to land in the region – ultimately leading to the Vermont Republic, and onto what is now the State of Vermont.

The first settlers arrived in Fairlee in 1766 and settlers arrived in what is now West Fairlee in 1778. The town became an small epicenter for industry with a gristmill, several saw mills and a factory building pipes and pumps. The Fairlee Railroad Depot was constructed in 1848 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the oldest railroad structure along the Connecticut River.
